The year was 2023, and Degrassi was still on their minds. Avis and Caroline had met one year prior when they were invited to participate in a few Degrassi roundtable discussions on Bianca Melrose's Youtube channel. Bonding over their love of this Canadian classic, Avis and Caroline realized that what the world needed was for them to come together and make an amazing Degrassi podcast. Or perhaps it wasn’t what the world needed, but it was certainly what THEY needed. And thus, Your Mom’s Pahdcast was born.
Whatever it takes, we know we can make it through watching, recapping, and dissecting all 425 episodes of Degrassi: The Next Generation and Degrassi: Next Class. And because we’re both just a little too ambitious, we’re really hoping to tackle Degrassi Jr. High and Degrassi High too! We’ll be talking about everything from fashion dos and don’ts to the ways Degrassi does and doesn’t go there, and how the writers did Hazel Aden/Andrea Lewis so dirty. We hope you’ll come along with us to revisit the teenage fever dream that is Degrassi.
about the pahd
Avis is a Software Specialist, writer, student of life, and lover of various forms of media. A recent transplant to New Jersey, she is constantly finding new ways to explore her new city. When she is not galavanting with her girlfriend on hikes, or at the climbing gym, she can be found reading horror and thriller novels in her hammock. As a July Cancer, her pastimes include sobbing over Titanic, Twilight, and even Train to Busan (it hits hard - please trust her) as well as commandeering the karaoke mic. Some of her favorite pieces of media include Six Feet Under, The L Word, Night by Elie Wiesel, Homecoming by Cynthia Voigt, The Very Best of Daryl Hall and John Oats, “Under the Bridge” & “The Zephyr Song” by RHCP, Scream 1,2 & 4, and Halloween (1978). She will most likely get booed for the fact that she enjoys Ellie Nash, but she has many reasons she is happy to share with you.
Caroline is a Realtor, novice crocheter, cult survivor, and television enthusiast. She resides in the chilly mountains of Vermont with her husband, two cats, and a dog. She’s a March Pisces just like Caitlin Ryan, and despite her best judgment, she always has been and always will be a Craig stan. Along with Degrassi, her favorite shows include Six Feet Under, Avatar the Last Airbender, The Office, The Good Place, and Schitt’s Creek. She also has a very complicated love-hate relationship with Pretty Little Liars. If you give her enough tequila, she will sing you the Degrassi Jr. High theme song from memory.
FRIEND OF THE PAHD SUE JOHANSEN
Sue Johanson RN or “Dr. Sally” as she appears on Degrassi was a champion of sex education, contraceptive and abortion access throughout her near 40 year career. In the 1980’s Sue hosted a radio talk show “Sunday Night Sex Show” focused on sex education. The program was adapted to her late night talk show bearing the same name which ran from 1985 - 2005. In 2002 “Sunday Night Sex Show” aired in the US under the name “Talk Sex with Sue Johanson”, this iteration aired until 2008. Sue continued to make appearances on late night talk shows as well as Degrassi as the iconic Dr. Sally. Sue Johnason died June 28th, 2023 in Thornhill, Ontario.
